Basics on the theory of heights and its applications to certain diophantine problems

The present article offers an overview of the basic theory of heights of algebraic points on varieties, illustrating some applications, mainly of diophantine type. The exposition is informal and with little detail, modeled on three lectures delivered by the author at the Fields Institute in Toronto in February 2017.
