The brain: functional divisions

The brain is the principal target for general anaesthesia. This article gives an overview of cerebral function affected during anaesthesia and sedation. Summaries are presented of the functional divisions of the brain relevant to hypnosis, movement, homeostasis, amnesia, and the processing of sensory information, including the cerebellum, brainstem, amygdala, hippocampus, and thalamus.
