Numerous studies with widely heterogeneous populations have demonstrated the efficacy of statins in reducing the rate of cardiovascular complications. The most recent interventional studies have aimed to evaluate whether a greater decrease in cholesterol, using high doses, is associated with an additional reduction in cardiovascular risk. The results observed in patients in secondary prevention support this notion and suggest that current therapeutic guidelines should be revised to recommend LDL-cholesterol levels lower than those currently recommended.
