Comunicación aumentativa y alternativa para personas con afasia

The present article reviews augmentative and alternative communication strategies and technical aids, both electronic and non-electronic, aimed at people with aphasia. Specific examples and short transcripts of interactions between people with aphasia and their partners are included. Key ideas on how to maximize the success of interventions are provided, emphasizing issues such as the need for the involvement and training of significant others. The need for aids and strategies to be tailored to the type of aphasia in each individual is also analyzed. Some of the controversies associated with the use of alternative and augmentative communication systems for people with complex communication needs are also discussed.
