This article discusses phonological knowledge and levels of phonological acquisition in preliterate children. We used the test BaterÃa de Inicio a la Lectura (BILÂ 3-6) (Start Reading Battery), which assesses skills related to successful reading acquisition. The BILÂ 3-6 has proved to be a useful test for assessing reading readiness in pre-school children. This test can help detect problems in skills related to the initial development of reading, which could facilitate effective intervention in problematic areas: rhyme, word counting, syllable counting, syllable isolation, phoneme isolation - first sound - and syllable deletion. The test was applied in a representative sample of 344 Spanish children, aged 3 to 6Â years. Application of this text allowed us to trace the developmental sequence of phonological awareness in the Spanish language and to clarify certain inconsistencies found in previous studies. Furthermore, establishing this sequence could serve as a guide to the design of intervention programs to strengthen or improve skills related to reading-readiness, which could be of benefit to future readers. This study focussed on reading-readiness and aimed to facilitate the acquisition of reading at an early age.
