Assessing microbiology test orders and specimen quality

The clinical utility of microbiology culture results is directly related to the types of specimens submitted for culture and theirquality. The identification and handling of clinically irrelevant or sub-optimal test orders, assessment of specimen quality, and direct Gram stain interpretation and reporting of microorganisms are reviewed. Test requests that can generate clinically misleading information are outlined.
