Anatomic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: The Japanese experience

Anatomical anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, which is designed to reproduce both anteromedial and posterolateral bundles of the ACL, has become very popular in Japan during the past decade. A number of basic studies have demonstrated the advantages of this procedure from both biomechanical and biological viewpoints. Although a statistically significant improvement in clinical outcome has not been attained, short-term clinical results are encouraging. This article focuses on the history and current trends in anatomical ACL reconstruction. We have also included the rationale for anatomical ACL reconstruction based on our experience.
