Catalytic selective oxidation of benzyl alcohols to aldehydes with rhenium complexes

The system (nBu4N)ReO4/PhIO catalyses effectively in organic media and under mild conditions the selective oxidation of primary benzyl alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes; in contrast, it is inactive towards a range of secondary benzyl alcohols and aliphatic (primary and secondary) alcohols.
