China's development strategy: A game of chess that countered orthodox development advice

Over the past half century China's development strategy has contributed to the transformation of a very poor economy to the world's second largest (at PPP), fastest growing economy. Chinese policy makers created and implemented effectively a unique development strategy that contained very few aspects of the orthodox development strategy advocated by the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. This paper will provide evidence suggesting that the outcomes of China's development strategies are due, at least in part, to China's pragmatic, unorthodox strategy.
