Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been employed to investigate the effect of heat removal on pore growth during self-propagating high temperature synthesis of nickel-aluminide. Significant growth in pore size, with respect to green specimen, occurs during synthesis. It has been observed that the rate of heat removal vis-Ã -vis the velocity of the propagating wave front during synthesis affects the growth of the pore size in the final product to some extent. Due to strong scattering nature of the specimens multiple scattering has also been taken into consideration while analyzing the SANS data. The scaling behaviour of the pore structure has also been dealt with.
