Production of cellulolytic enzymes from ascomycetes: Comparison of solid state and submerged fermentation

- We report a comparison of the SSF and SmF processes for cellulase production.
- Cellulase activities reported for ascomycetes grown in SSF and SmF are critically discussed.
- A very important taxonomically re-evaluation of reported cellulase producing fungi is provided.
- We specify much needed recommendations for standardization of comparisons of SSF and SmF.
