Avian foraging and nesting use of created snags in intensively-managed forests of western Oregon, USA

▶ Snags created by topping live trees with a mechanical harvesters were studied to determine use. ▶ Use of mechanically topped trees for nesting was low during the first 5 years post-creation. ▶ Created-snag foraging use increased by ∼20% from snag age 2 to snag age 5. ▶ We did not find a strong relationship between snag density and foraging use. ▶ Creating snags with a feller-buncher is a viable option for increasing snags in young forests.
