Profiles of fatty acids and triacylglycerols and their influence on the anaerobic biodegradability of effluents from poultry slaughterhouse

► Lipids of effluent from a poultry slaughterhouse were hydrolyzed with 1% of enzymatic pool for 4 h. ► Higher concentration of long-chain fatty acids did not inhibit the anaerobic metabolism. ► A higher specific methane production was obtained in the experiment with effluent pre-treated for 4 h. ► Contrary to what is reported in the literature for synthetic effluents, effluents from production plants contain other components which could affect the toxicity of free fatty acids on the biomass.
