Age-related changes in human trabecular bone: Relationship between microstructural stress and strain and damage morphology

► Trabecular stresses and strains associated with microdamage formation were compared by age. ► Stress/strain values were obtained by combining histological assessment with linear FEA. ► Trabeculae from younger donors sustained higher stresses prior to damaging than older donors. ► Thin, rod-like, and vertically oriented trabeculae susceptible to severe damage in older group.
