Controlling the release from silver electrodes by titanium adlayers for health monitoring

In this study we have demonstrated the inhibition of silver release by a naturally passivation (oxidation) of a nanoscaled thin titanium adlayer. A clear dependence of the silver release on the titanium layer thickness was observed enabling an antibacterial function while becoming non-cytotoxic. These coating systems, transferred to fibrous substrates, present a unique way to maintain long term medical applications such as body electrodes for electrocardiography (ECG) or neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES).72
