► EI and group membership effects on emotion recognition were examined. ► The study included Caucasian and Far-East Asian participants. ► The picture stimuli used were of individuals from these two ethnic groups. ► An in-group advantage in negative emotion identification was found. ► EI was unrelated to emotional identification performance.
