► Task awareness and reactivity to failure was explored in Alzheimer's disease. ► A success-failure manipulation ensured similar performance in controls and patients. ► AD patients showed impaired awareness of task performance. ► However, emotional reactivity to experience of failure was preserved. ► The findings suggest implicit processing of task performance in AD.
