► Cognitive decline among older American adults occurs more rapidly for those with the APOE-E4 genotype. ► The size of the genetic effects is contingent upon the type of neighborhoods in which people live. ► Genotype is more strongly associated with cognitive decline for adults who live in neighborhoods with low levels of social disorder.
