► Mitochondrial DNA obtained from ancient and modern Arctic sled dogs. ► Most ancient Thule-period dogs throughout the Arctic share a unique, A31, haplotype. ► Most modern dogs of the Eastern, but not Western, Arctic also carried this haplotype. ► First direct evidence that modern Eastern Arctic dogs maintain indigenous ancestry.
