The trial of life is an apparently vague notion which reached its highest level of phenomenological clarification in the work of Gabriel Marcel. The concept is characterized by innumerable forms and is accompanied by a loss of plenitude and a climate of adversity and uncertainty, particularly in extreme experiences of life. The trial of life exposes the tragic relief of existence, occurring when the human being wavers, losses balance, or is about to fail. The individual response can be one of hope or despair, openness or closeness in search for practical wisdom. The trial of life is a revealing concept disclosing the real nature of existence and destiny.
