Quantitative determination of the boar taint compounds androstenone, skatole, indole, 3α-androstenol and 3β-androstenol in wild boars (Sus scrofa) reveals extremely low levels of the tryptophan-related degradation products

► Major and minor boar taint compounds were determined in a set of entire male wild boars by GC-MS. ► High concentrations of the boar pheromones androstenone and 3α/3β -androstenol were observed. ► Skatole was not detectable in 50% of the animals and remarkably low in all other animals. ► Differences in the skatole deposition between wild boars and domestic pigs were concluded. ► Species differences probably influencing the skatole deposition were elaborated.
