A validated GC-MS method for the detection of tropane alkaloids in buckwheat (Fagopyron esculentum L.) fruits, flours and commercial foods

► Toxic tropane alkaloids are reported as contaminants of commercial buckwheat. ► A new method based on GC-MS in SI mode was developed for their detection. ► The method was applied and validated for buckwheat flour and derived products. ► LOD for atropine, scopolamine is 0.3, 1 μg/kg and LOQ is 1, 6 μg/kg, respectively. ► The sensibility of the method is below the threshold of toxicity for tropane alkaloids.
