Chemical composition and antimicrobial, cytotoxicity, antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities of Salvia spinosa L.

- Chemical composition of essential oil was determined and 19 compounds were identified.
- Essential oil showed high aldehyde oxidase and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity.
- The methanol extract exhibited great amount of phenolic compounds and strong antimicrobial activity.
- Results showed that S. spinosa could serve as a functional food for the management of diabetes.
- Findings indicated that S. spinosa has high commercial potential because of its biological and nutritional properties.
