The transcriptome and proteome are altered in marine polychaetes (Annelida) exposed to elevated metal levels

► We present one of the first sequenced polychaete transcriptomes. ► The transcriptome provided useful genetic baseline data for protein identification. ► Atox1 was up-regulated in polychaetes that inhabited a copper-polluted harbour. ► Several new targets for biomarker development are presented.
