Synthesis and antiherpetic activity of carboxymethylated and sulfated hyaluronan derivatives

► Carboxymethyl hyaluronan sulfates of varying degree of substitution were prepared. ► Degree of sulfation of carboxymethylated hyaluronan can be controlled. ► Hyaluronans with high degree of sulfation show a strong antiherpetic activity.
