► Cellulose nanocrystal is successfully isolated from mengkuang leaves. ► Chemical composition of these leaves shows the increase of cellulose contents after treatment. ► The crystallinity and thermal stability increases after chemical treatment. ► The aspect ratio of isolated cellulose nanocrystal is in the range of 10-20.
