A short synthesis of highly soluble chemoselective chitosan derivatives via “click chemistry”

► Short synthesis of chemoselective chitosan derivatives was achieved. ► Click chemistry was applied for chemoselective modification. ► N-(4-bromopthaloyl)-chitosan had higher solubility than conventional derivative. ► N-(4-bromopthaloyl)-chitosan was prepared in aqueous media.
