Comparison of line-by-line and band models of near-IR methane absorption applied to outer planet atmospheres

► A new near-IR methane line list incorporates improved measurements at 80 K and 296 K. ► Line-by-line (LBL) outer planet transmission results are compared to band models. ► LBL results agree best with Karkoschka and Tomasko (Karkoschka, E., Tomasko, M. [2010]. Icarus 205, 309-319) model. ► LBL results are in error short of 1.26 μm and where CH3D line data are missing. ► A measured Uranus spectrum is used to define a far wing line shape for the H window.
