Chronology and sources of lunar impact bombardment

► We find that the lunar basins formed in two separate bombardment episodes. ► One episode comprises early bombardment and the other an impact spike. ► Early bombardment was likely dominated by primordial Mars-crossers. ► The later spike was caused by impact disruption of one Vesta-sized body. ► This body was likely also the parent body of mesosiderite meteorites.
