The aim of palliative care units is to offer a peaceful environment to the patient after a rapid hospital stay where the nursing is quick and not very regular. In this unit the patients and their families need and want time to regain confidence, to get peace of mind which can counterbalance the fear of death. These ethics are unfortunately undergoing a change. Formerly the patients could stay in these units for long periods if needed but now they can spend only a few days here. In this article we will discuss about the new hospital rules, which aim at reducing hospital stays in the future. Today the doctors are urged to transform their departments into short-stay units. We will see how these management plans are an obstacle for the doctor and how the patients and the family are troubled by the fact that they have to go back home after a short stay or change hospitals. The Milgram experiment on obedience to authority figures measured the willingness of participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal conscience. Can this amazing experiment help us to consider and offer resistance to these new rules in palliative care units?
