How do health care workers cope with this stress? How do they help the patient and the family make sense out of the dramaticsituation? The fact that the serious disease is incurable adds a tragicdimension to the announcement since it seems that nothing can arrest theinevitable progression of the disease. The communicational and psychologicaldimensions of this type of announcement have been widely discussed. We proposehere to focus on the existential aspect of the crisis, looking at the question from a philosophical point of view. Conceived as a tragic event, the announcement halts the dialogue, leading to a crisis of identity and spatio-temporal existence. The right attitude, that is the most adapted attitude, is to approach the question in such a way that all the protagonists(children, parents, caregivers) enter into a mutual cooperation where eachfeels directly concerned and can actively participate in coping with the tragicevent.
