Transcriptional regulation of the Na+/H+ exchanger NHE3 by chronic exposure to angiotensin II in renal epithelial cells

► Chronic angiotensin II exerts a stimulatory effect on NHE3 activity and expression. ► Increase in NHE3 mRNA levels is not related with change in NHE3 mRNA stability. ► The stimulatory effect on NHE3 promoter activity involves Sp1/Egr-1 binding site. ► NHE3 promoter stimulation depends on the activation of several intracellular pathways.
