Mitochondrial NAD dependent aldehyde dehydrogenase either from yeast or human replaces yeast cytoplasmic NADP dependent aldehyde dehydrogenase for the aerobic growth of yeast on ethanol

► Mutant ALDH1 barely supports the growth of triple ALDH deleted yeast on ethanol. ► NAD dependent mitochondrial ALDH2 replaces cytoplasmic NADP dependent ALDH1 in yeast. ► ALDH1 with mitochondrial leader attached is unable to be imported into mitochondria. ► Localization or coenzyme specificity of ALDH is not essential for aerobic growth of yeast on ethanol.
