⺠The role of ascorbate in transferrin iron (Fe-Tf) uptake is unknown. ⺠Ascorbate stimulates Fe-Tf uptake by a novel intracellular reductive mechanism. ⺠This mechanism is different to ascorbate's role in stimulating non-Tf Fe uptake. ⺠The reductive mechanism involved requires the classical transferrin cycle. ⺠These results are important since cultured cells are typically devoid of ascorbate.
