Membrane-bound mucin modular domains: From structure to function

► Membrane-bound mucins share conserved modular domains such as EGF and SEA. ► Transmembrane mucins are characterised by an O-glycosylated extracellular subunit. ► The EGF-like domains mediate the interactions with different signalling pathways. ► We predict the EGF-like and SEA mucin 3D structures using the Phyre 2 server. ► Spliced mucins lacking functional domains may show altered biological functions.
