► Non-stem cancer cells secrete IL-6 under mammosphere culture conditions. ► The IL-6-JAK1-STAT3 signal transduction pathway activates OCT-4 gene expression. ► Conversion of non-CSCs into CSCs occurs through regulation of OCT-4 gene expression.
