►We model schizophrenia in rats by combining social isolation and subchronic MK-801. ►We examine double Y-maze performance following phenelzine treatment. ►Phenelzine dose-dependently improved performance in the double Y-maze. ►Neurochemical analyses confirm that phenelzine increased GABA levels in the brain.
