Neuroprotective effects of the 17β-estradiol against ethanol-induced neurotoxicity and oxidative stress in the developing male rat cerebellum: Biochemical, histological and behavioral changes

► Exposure to ethanol during PN4-6 can result in Purkinje cell loss in the rat pups. ► We examine neuroprotective effects of estradiol against Purkinje cell toxicity. ► Estradiol treatment prevents cerebellar Purkinje cell loss and related motor deficit. ► Estradiol inhibits peroxidation of lipids and improves antioxidant enzymes activity.
