People with Down syndrome (DS) are especially infection-prone, particularly during childhood. The main reason is the association between DS and multifactorial primary immune deficiency. Early fragility in adults with DS facilitates infections, especially in older people. Many of these conditions are immunizable, but there are few studies of vaccination and DS and they do not include more recent vaccinations. While we await studies on this subject, the current evidence suggests that available vaccines are safe and effective for people with DS, although the response may be lower than normal, meaning that strict compliance with vaccination schedules is required to ensure their effectivenes.
