چکیده انگلیسی
Recognized as one of the key figures in the spread of inoculation against smallpox in Spain, the Irish doctor Timothy O'Scanlan published three books and numerous press articles that reflected his expertise and interest in a practice which began late in Spain. Accepted as a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Madrid in November 1778, he read his inaugural speech in April 1779. It was O'Scanlan's first approximation to inoculation, which he had been successfully practicing since 1771. The text was included with some modifications, without mentioning the date of the writing, in the introduction to his first book Modern Practice of Inoculation (1784). The manuscript is kept in the Archive of Conde de Campomanes (Fundación Universitaria Española, Madrid).
