Vaccination of lambs against Haemonchus contortus infection with a somatic protein (Hc23) from adult helminths

- A protein from adult Haemonchus contortus (Hc23) has been purified.
- Hc23 elicits a protective response against experimental haemonchosis in lambs.
- Protection was induced with Al(OH)3 or bacterial (Propionibacterium + LPS) adjuvant.
- Hc23 reduces parasite' egg excretion (70.67-85.64%) and burdens (67.17% to >86%).
- Vaccinated lambs showed significantly higher live weight gains.
