• Ligands with the azine group constitute an important class in coordination chemistry.
• O, N, O and O, N, S donor ligands with the azine fragment are considered.
• Non-oxido, oxido and dioxidovanadium(IV/V) complexes with such ligands are reviewed.
• Heterometallic and mixed-valence vanadium complexes are also included.
The role of azine fragment ligands for the development of the coordination chemistry of vanadium(IV/V) complexes is reviewed. A wide range of complexes with different (N, O), (N, S) and (O, N, S) donor ligands having non-oxido, oxido and dioxidovanadium centers is illustrated. Methods of syntheses, coordination properties and stabilizing factors for the particular form (non-oxido/oxido/dioxido), reaction conditions, donor properties of the ligands, effect of secondary ligands and other effects are discussed. The review also includes heterometallic and mixed-valence complexes. Important properties, such as DNA binding, antibacterial and anti-amoebal activities, functional models of vanadium-dependent haloperoxidases (VHPOs) and catalytic potential toward peroxidative oxidation of hydrocarbons, of these vanadium complexes are also discussed.
