• 1,2-Dicarba-closo-carboranes as versatile acceptors in luminescent systems with dual emission.
• Benzodiazaboroles as luminescent motifs in fluoride-, cyanide- and trimethylammonium-sensors.

1,3,2-Benzodiazaboroles are compounds at the interface between inorganic and organic chemistry. Numerous representatives of this family of heterocycles have been synthesized, where the boron atom is linked to various π-conjugated scaffolds. Herein the 10-π-electron containing benzodiazaborole unit acts as a π-electron-donor.Conjugation of the vacant 2pz-orbital at the boron center with the π-orbitals of the attached organic π-systems is responsible for unique absorption and emission characteristics such as large Stokes shifts and high quantum yields.A series of benzodiazaborolyl complexes of iridium have been employed as emitter materials in organic light emitting devices.Benzodiazaboroles are building blocks in sensors for fluoride- and cyanide-ions.
