Mixed-metal one-dimensional sulfides-A class of materials with differences and similarities to oxides

▶ Oxides are the best-known compounds in solid state chemistry and, ideally, provide a paradigm for other types of materials. ▶ Sulfides are not structurally related to oxides due to the larger covalency of the S2− anion compared to the O2− anion. ▶ However, for one-dimensional mixed-metal sulfides the ionic model can still describe structure and properties. ▶ A variety of magnetic and transport properties is found in one-dimensional sulfides. ▶ A rare example of low-spin configuration for tetrahedral Fe3+ in CsGa1−xFexS2. ▶ Negative magnetoresistance up to ∼10% recently reported in Ba2Co1−xZnxS3. ▶ Low-dimensional compounds, in general, are gaining more attention due to their similarities to nanowires.
