• We examined the thermal expansion of solid solutions BaZn2−xCoxSi2O7 (0• BaZn2Si2O7 exhibits the highest thermal expansion due to a phase transition.
• Substitution of small amounts of Zn2+ against Co2+ lead to decreasing thermal expansion.
• The thermal expansions re-increased with further increasing Co2+ concentrations.
• Seals based on these solid solutions should be suitable for solid oxide fuel cells.
