The crystal structures of bis(acetato-O)triphenylbismuth(V) and biphenyl-2,2′-ylene-chloro-bismuth(III) have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Bi(V) compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c (Z = 4) with a = 12.968(1), b = 9.920(1), c = 15.962(1) Å, β = 105.941(2)°, V = 1974.3(3) Å3. In the structure, the molecule has a crystallographically imposed C2-symmetry with the acetates acting as bidentate ligands resulting in a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal coordination environment around the Bi atom. The Bi(III) compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121 (Z = 4) with a = 8.745(1), b = 9.268(1), c = 12.966(2) Å, V = 1050.8(2) Å3 in form of polymeric chains bridged by chloride ions. The Bi atom adopts a trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry with one equatorial position vacant.
► The molecular structures of Ph3Bi(OAc)2 and (bph)BiCl have been determined.
► In the Bi(V) complex the Bi atom is coordinated pentagonal bipyramidal.
► The Bi(III) complex is aggregated to infinite chains via bridging Cl atoms.
