Effect of accompanying ions and ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid on heavy metals sorption using hybrid materials Lewatit FO 36 and Purolite Arsen Xnp
چکیده انگلیسی

• Purolite Arsen Xnp and Lewatit FO 36 were used for removal of heavy metal complexes with EDDS from waste waters.
• Different factors affect the metal ions sorption on hybrid ion exchangers.
• Hybrid ion exchangers have high sorption capacity for Pb(II) ions.
• Kinetics are controlled by the pseudo-second order rate equation.
• Addition of SO42−, NO3− and Cl− causes the decrease of sorption capacity.

The results of the new hybrid ion exchangers Lewatit FO 36 and Purolite Arsen Xnp investigations are presented in the article. Their structure, surface chemical properties and sorption ability towards Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) ions with and without the presence of S,S-(ethylenediamine N,N′-disuccinic) acid (S,S-EDDS) as a complexing agent as well as the accompanying Cl−, NO3− and SO42− ions are described in detail. S,S-EDDS is suggested as a promising substitute for EDTA in the nuclear energy industry, for chemical cleaning of boiler and heat-transfer surfaces. The sorption process was carried out under batch (static) conditions from single- and multicomponent aqueous solutions to select the ion exchanger that showed the best performance towards the above-mentioned ions. The sorption capacity of Lewatit FO 36 and Purolite Arsen Xnp increased with the increasing metal ions concentration in the solution. The sorption capacity was higher for Purolite Arsen Xnp and equal to: 23.70 mg/g for Cu(II), 26.21 mg/g for Zn(II), 50 mg/g for Cd(II), 139 mg/g for Pb(II) and 23.80 mg/g for Cr(VI). The detailed characterization of the above mentioned hybrid ion exchangers was made by the electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements using the X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer. The Lewatit FO 36 shows the superparamagnetic state while Purolite Arsen Xnp does not exhibit such properties.
