• A nano-magnetite impregnated mesocellular foam was prepared as an enzyme carrier.
• Protein content and activity were much higher than those by physical immobilization.
• Enzyme immobilized by coordinating bonding showed 80% of initial activity in reuse.
• The particle immobilized by enzyme was easily recovered by magnetic separation.
A nano-sized magnetite (NSM) impregnated mesocellular foam (MCF) composite was synthesized to improve enzymatic activity and reusability in the immobilized state. 3-Chloropropyltriethoxy silane-di-(2-picolyl)amine was linked to the particle for cooperative complex formation with an enzyme through coordinated bonding with Cu (NSM/MCF-Cu). The NSM/MCF-Cu immobilized by histidine-tagged enzymes exhibited the high protein content and specific activity, showing an approximately 5 times higher protein content and 3 times higher specific activity compared to physically immobilized MCF particles. The NSM/MCF-Cu particles were recovered by magnetic separation and approximately 80% of the initial activity was retained even after 10 uses.
