Microstructural selection in conventionally and rapidly solidified Sm-Co-T alloys

Subsequent analysis of rapidly solidified Sm-Co-V alloys resulted in composition-magnetic property maps. Excellent magnetic properties were observed in the as-solidified state for (Sm0.09Co0.91)97V3. The coercivity was determined to be 5 kOe and the energy product was 4.3 MGOe, which decreased as both the Sm/Co ratio and V content were changed. The melt-spun microstructure consisted of primary Sm2Co17 and interdendritic Co more indicative of peritectic solidification, and the morphology of the phases changed as the Sm/Co ratio changed. The different conventionally and rapidly solidified microstructures suggest alteration of the equilibrium phase relationships due to high undercoolings.
