• A simple surfactant-free microwave-assisted hydrothermal method is reported.
• Magnesium phosphate nanosheet-assembled hierarchical structures are obtained.
• The reported method is facile, rapid, surfactant-free and environmentally friendly.
Magnesium phosphate is an alternative to well-known calcium phosphate biomaterials and an excellent candidate for biomedical applications due to its outstanding biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, to the best of our knowledge, the microwave-assisted hydrothermal rapid synthesis of magnesium phosphate hierarchical structures (MPHS) has not been reported. Herein, we report the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method for the rapid synthesis of MPHS using MgCl2·6H2O and adenosine 5׳-triphosphate disodium salt hydrate (Na2ATP) in aqueous solution in the absence of any surfactant. The effects of the microwave heating temperature and Na2ATP on the morphology of the products are investigated. This method is facile, rapid, surfactant-free and environmentally friendly. The as-synthesized products are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis.
